Why incubation beats industry in Austin’s music DNA.

Austin exports culture the way it exports tech. Terry Lickona, longtime executive producer of Austin City Limits, argues Austin is a music incubator, not the music industry, and that’s a feature.

Three Ideas

1) Incubation beats industrialization for originality.

“Austin is, has been, hopefully always will be original and authentic and not necessarily commercially driven…But unlike Nashville, unlike New York and LA and other places like that, there isn’t that industry. Austin, and I’m not the first to say this, but it’s more like a music incubator”

Austin lacks a large, centralized music-industry machine and instead offers community, stages, and cross-pollination where artists test songs live and level up through performance. That structure favors originality over formula and keeps the scene eclectic by design.

2) The business model shifted: streaming spreads, touring pays.

“Touring in general is really the moneymaker for artists these days”

Festivals and headline nights now concentrate earnings: headliners at ACL Fest can command six to seven figures, mid-tier acts may earn more on a single festival weekend than a run of club dates, and streaming works primarily for reach rather than revenue. Rising travel and living costs make early touring harder, yet many artists still take the van, haul their gear, and grind because the stage remains the best path to build an audience.

3) Venues are a key piece of the culture stack.

“The Moody Center, thanks to their, all of their industry connections has booked world-class major headline acts…The whole Red River district is a legit music district. There are more music venues within that three to four block stretch than any other neighborhood in Austin”

Austin is building culture in rooms. Arenas anchor global headliners while clubs, comedy rooms, and restaurants create nightly habit, discovery, and cross-pollination. Dollars compete across these rooms, yet the mix expands the stack as more stages, fuller calendars, and denser foot traffic push artists from small rooms to festivals and back again.

Guest Bio

Since 1978, Terry Lickona has been the producer, now executive producer, of “Austin City Limits.” Celebrating 38 years on PBS, ACL is the longest-running popular music series in American television history. In 2003, the President of the United States awarded ACL the National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence. In 2012, ACL received a rare institutional Peabody Award for excellence and outstanding achievement. Terry has also produced other specials and series for public television, cable, domestic and foreign syndication, home video, and DVD - over 800 programs, with artists ranging from Ray Charles and Johnny Cash to Juanes, Coldplay and Neil Young to Willie Nelson, Arcade Fire, Radiohead and Pearl Jam. October 2012 also marks the 11th anniversary of the Austin City Limits Music Festival, one of the most successful music festivals in the country. In 2011 Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater opened its doors in downtown Austin as a world class live performance venue combined with a state of the art studio soundstage.

Lickona has been the co-producer of the Grammy Awards Show on CBS since 2012. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences from 2005-2006. He also currently serves on the Board of the Latin Recording Academy.

A native of Poughkeepsie, New York, he has lived in Austin, Texas since 1974.
